Leadership Development Discussion – Expecting Greatness

It appears that most of us seek greatness in some form. Ask anyone to tell you about their ambitions and you will often hear this adjective used to describe all sorts of aspirations. We want to become “a great father,” “a great manager,” “a great runner,” “a great leader,” or “a great pianist.” The pursuit of greatness in probably closely connected with the most fundamental human needs.

Reminding others of the pursuit of their individual greatness may be one of the most important roles of those who seek to lead. On the occasion of Winston Churchill’s death in 1965, the political philosopher, Leo Strauss, told his students that “we have no higher duty, and no more pressing duty, than to remind ourselves and our students, of political greatness, of human greatness, of the peaks of human excellence.”

What human greatness have you witnessed recently? How have you recognized that person?

We can recognize greatness at work and at home, from adults and from children, from individuals and from teams. I saw greatness at all levels on the soccer field yesterday. I coach a soccer team of 8 year old girls. Our last game of the season was yeseterday -- it was cold and pouring down rain. Not only did every child show up to play in this game, but one child showed up to cheer (she's hurt) and another child showed up to play (against her mother's better judgment) even though she was sick. It was miserable out -- and these girls had a ball!! In eight weeks, they learned what it was like to be a team, to depend on each other, to cheer for each other and to have fun together. Win or lose -- that, to me is greatness!! We learned more from these girls than they learned from us the entire season.
